Which Broadfork is for me?
We manufacture two styles of broadfork: the 13-inch tine and the 16-inch tine.
The 13" size is a great tool that meets almost everyone's needs. It's suitable for breaking new ground, and for tilling or aerating existing bed, and usable by any adult. The 13-inch fork has 49-inch handles and weighs 25 pounds.
The 16-inch size is a specialized tool for the most demanding cultivators, especially those growing root crops, who needs the deepest possible aeration. The 16" tines do an excellent job of tilling existing beds, while they're a bit more difficult to use for breaking new ground. The 16" broadfork has 47" handles and also weighs 25 pounds.
We recommend the 13" size for the new broadfork user and anyone who wants a general-purpose tool. If you need the 16" size, you already know why.
Why do the broadforks have different handle lengths?
The slightly shorter handle on the 16" broadfork keeps the overall length within the limits of our shippers.
What colors are available?
The broadfork is available in Eggplant Purple, Fire Engine Red, Limeade Green and Caution Yellow. Please check our order page for the in-stock colors.
Don't you have to be really strong to use the broadfork?
Our users tell us that the broadfork is easier to use than a garden spade. It uses your body weight to get the tool into the ground, without stress to legs or lower back. Working the soil uses upper body muscles in a balanced push-pull motion that takes some strength but doesn't strain the muscles or the back. There's no deep bending of the waist, no twisting of the back, and no lifting of the weight of soil.
Can I pick up the broadfork in person?
If you can come to Vashon Island, you can buy your broadfork at a discount.
Did you invent the broadfork?
Broadfork-type tools have evolved for centuries. We refined the design with feedback from users to produce a sturdier, lifetime tool that can be used even in the clay soils so common around Puget Sound.
What other tools do you make?
We're currently developing an affordable chicken plucker suitable for small-scale commercial production, or large-scale home production. We expect to have the Island Plucker available later this year. The Avalon Cider Press will be our next product.

Satisfaction Guarantee / Return Policy / Warranty. If for any reason you are not satisfied with your purchase, you may return it within 30 days for a full refund, including return shipping costs.
For free return shipping, please call or email to schedule a Fedex pickup. You MUST return the broadfork in its original packaging, including the plywood shipping inserts.
Our broadfork is meant to last a lifetime, if not abused. We offer a limited lifetime warranty, that if your broadfork is damaged in normal use, we will replace it at no charge, so long as we are still manufacturing a similar product. Please send a photo of the damage and explain how it occurred. We won't ask you to find your receipt or prove that you're the original owner.
What about sales tax?
If you're a Washington state resident, yes we pay sales tax. Our shopping cart software can't handle WA's new destination-based sales tax rules yet, so we figure it out later and adjust your cart subtotal such that it plus your actual sales tax adds up to your total charge. For example, if you're in Anacortes with 8.2% tax and purchase one broadfork for $250, we adjust your subtotal to $231.05 and report and pay sales tax of $18.95, for a total charge of $250.
Shipping
Broadforks ship by Fedex Ground / Fedex Home Delivery. Transit time is 1 to 4 days in the continental U.S.
Items appearing in our shopping cart are ordinarily in stock and ship within 2 business days of receipt of your order. Occasionally, orders may be delayed by a few additional days, in which case we will notify you.
Please note, Fedex requires a phone number for the delivery location - we need this to process your order.
