I purchased the Tall Broadfork a couple of weeks ago (not from your site because you only take credit cards rather than Apple Pay or PayPal. Sorry).
I'm in my mid-seventies and found it easy to use in the clay soils we have here in DFW. The soil in our backyard hasn't been disturbed in well over 25 years but the Tall Broadfork handled it--no problem. A two hour session was not hard at all for me. No doubt it would be even easier if I was 180 cm and 100 kg rather than 173 cm and 74 kg. So don't be afraid of those warnings about how you need to be super strong and young to use the Tall Broadfork.

Will your heart rate be elevated? Yes. Will it be elevated so much that you are panting? No.
Method I used:
- Lift the broadfork so that the tines are vertical.
- Check carefully that the tines are well away from your feet.
- Drop the broadfork.
- Stand on the broadfork with the handles forward so the tines are vertical.
- Rock back and forth and side to side. In a compacted clay soil the tines will not usually penetrate to their full depth (they will come close, 7 cm or so not penetrating) but they will penetrate to where the soil changes from black to red.
- Pull the handles back to lift the soil.
- Push the handles forward to break apart the soil.
Broadforks are amazing and without them I could not cultivate my land nearly as easily or well. From sod busting to aeration, they have helped immensely. I have had the privilege of using the 12” and 14” models. The 12” fork is great for soils with moderate clay. For heavier clay soils I recommend the 14”. I have not used the 16” model. The 12” is much lighter but I managed to bend it trying to till pure clay. I went through the warranty process and received a 14” replacement with excellent service. Where the 12” faltered the 14” blew through with the first try. The 14” is noticeably heavier due in part to the longer tines and handles but also the thicker pipe used for the handles. I’ll include a photo of the soil I had trouble working so others can compare to their own. I hope the information I provided helps others make their selection.
Works great at breaking through my clay soil.
Heavy, well made and there is definately no way I could break it. Broke apart heavy clay soil but it took some strength and cardio. Not a bad thing and it works in wet soils unlike a tiller. Just watch out for rocks under one side when you stand on it. It wacked me in the head but that’s because I’m an idiot.
The tall is perfect for me as I am 6’4”. Breaks through my deep compacted soil with ease and deeper than I can reach with my tiller.
